The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949)
original production animation title cel painting
gouache on untrimmed animation cel sheet, image size: 5.25" x 8"

This original hand-painted animation cel of the opening title credits for The Wind in the Willows segment was created in the Disney ink-and-paint department and photographed during the making of the animated feature. This cel painting appears during the opening credits against a blue color card and lists Basil Rathbone as narrator of "The Story of Mr. Toad From The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame."

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949) can be regarded as the last of Disney's "package" features of the 1940s, or possibly as the take-off film for the amazing run of animated films that included Cinderella (1950), Alice in Wonderland (1951), Peter Pan (1953), Lady and the Tramp (1955) and Sleeping Beauty (1959). This writer leans heavily to the latter interpretation. This film's stories—which also featured The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving—and their characters are perfectly suited to the medium.

In Mr. Toad, Walt Disney's writers and artists created a believable world inhabited by humans and sentient animals, with the latter perfectly portrayed as character types that were essential to effective movie-making of the previous fifty years. Bing Crosby's narration for the Ichabod Crane story and the portrayal of "old Icky" are tailor-made to the series of gags that build to the climactic showpiece that is the Halloween pursuit of the timid schoolmaster by the fearsome Headless Horseman. In The Disney Films author Leonard Maltin writes that The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad was "the first film to really reassert Disney's staff as the leading exponents of animated film."

Studio designation "5-A" is written in ink at lower right to mark this cel's place in the title sequence. Our certificate of authenticity is included.

There is slight surface rubbing: VERY FINE condition.
